How it is worked out

£100.00 times 20 divided by 100 is £20.00 VAT. £100.00 plus £20.00 is £120.00 including VAT.

This VAT calculator works in both directions. Enter a net amount to get the VAT and the gross total, or enter a price that includes VAT to see how much of it is tax. You can choose the standard rate of 20%, the reduced rate of 5%, or any other rate you need.

Adding and removing VAT

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the rate and divide by 100 to get the tax, then add it to the net amount. £100 at 20% is £20 VAT, £120 in total.

To remove VAT from a price that includes it, do not take 20% off: that is the most common mistake. Divide the gross price by 1.2 instead. £120 divided by 1.2 is £100 before VAT, and the £20 difference is the VAT. Taking 20% off £120 would give £96, which is wrong.

Example at 5%

A bill of £52.50 including VAT at 5%: choose remove VAT and the 5% rate. £52.50 divided by 1.05 is £50 before VAT, and the VAT is £2.50. The calculator shows the net amount, the VAT and the gross amount one under the other, and each figure copies with one click.

Which VAT rate applies

In the United Kingdom the standard rate is 20% and the reduced rate is 5%. Which rate applies to a particular product or service is set out on GOV.UK. If in doubt, ask your accountant: this calculator does the sum, it does not give tax advice. For other sums with percentages, use the percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate VAT?

Multiply the net amount by the rate and divide by 100. £100 at 20% is £20 VAT, so £120 in total.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the price by 1.2 for 20% VAT, or by 1.05 for 5%. £120 including VAT is £100 before VAT.

Why can I not just take 20% off the gross price?

Because the 20% is worked out on the net amount, not on the gross one. Taking it off the gross price gives a net amount that is too low.

What are the VAT rates in the UK?

The standard rate is 20% and the reduced rate is 5%. GOV.UK lists which goods and services each rate applies to.

Can I work out another country's VAT?

Yes. Choose other rate in the list and enter the rate you need, for example 19% or 21%.
